A FEW WORDS ABOUT MY ILLUSTRATIONS

Illustration offers an exciting meeting point of the art of words and that of pictures. It challenges my usual, established way of creativity and let me wander in a playful space. I like to illustrate children stories for early readers or older children that open a richer imagination and a wider worldview.

For illustrations I work with watercolour or a digital drawing device. Although I don’t use a consistent personal style, many elements, like the realistic approach, the love for details, the classical, nostalgic aesthetic and the colourful, painterly effects are common in my works.

I approach illustration as if it were a silent film. The pictures must work without a text. Moreover they not only replace the narrative, but also complement it, by showing such details or context that the tale only suggests.

This is much easier when I know the story inside out. In fact I imagine illustrations for almost every piece that I write, but the limited time rarely allows me to illustrate my stories. My illustrated children’s book, Az aranytornyú város is an exception.
